A New Paradigm of Justice for Reconciliation in Colombia

On 29 July 2021, Embrace Dialogue and the Centre of Religion, Reconciliation and Peace of the University of Winchester hosted Giovanni Álvarez to discuss Recent Developments in Transitional Justice in Colombia, as part of a series of events on reconciliation. This dialogue led to the identification of key challenges, achievements and hopes for the future.

The LGTBI Community in the JEP

The Chamber for Recognition of Truth issued Auto 066 in which, for the first time, five people from the LGBTI community were accredited as victims. By means of this decision, the Chamber established that the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP) has jurisdiction in cases of persecution and discrimination against the LGBTI community associated with their sexual orientation or gender identity in the context of the armed conflict.

The Embrace Dialogue Academia Seminars (EDAS), held monthly via zoom over three terms in 2020-21, was a series of eight seminars with academics working on different aspects of peace and conflict in Colombia, from different disciplines, countries and career levels, and sought to build bridges between academic research and policy.

The ground must be prepared for a national dialogue

After 28 days of demonstrations, the conditions for a national dialogue are yet to appear. Violence continues to be used by state forces against protesters in several cities across Colombia. At many of the assembly points, protesters have been attacked by armed actors, and the allegations against the police of sexual violence are alarming.
